From the Foreword
What You Will Learn

Six pillars of a retirement that lasts.

Most retirement books were written for someone else. This one was built for the person who saved deliberately, built something real, and now needs the strategy to match.

01 / 06

Make informed income decisions

Structure your income to help support the retirement lifestyle you have in mind — with strategies built around real households, not academic scenarios.

02 / 06

Understand Social Security strategy

Filing age, spousal coordination, and survivor planning — the choices that quietly shape long-term household income for the next thirty years.

03 / 06

Build a tax-efficient income plan

Sequence withdrawals, manage bracket exposure, and design a household plan aimed at helping you keep more of what you’ve earned over a long retirement.

04 / 06

Manage risk and sequence of return

Understand how the order of returns — not just the average — can shape the longevity of a retirement portfolio, and how to plan around it.

05 / 06

Plan for healthcare and long-term care

Medicare, IRMAA, supplemental coverage, and long-term care planning — framed around protecting your financial independence rather than disrupting it.

06 / 06

Retire with confidence and purpose

Translate strategy into a clear, actionable plan — one you can hold up against the next thirty years and the people who depend on you.

The Framework

Five decisions that define a retirement.

Most retirements aren’t lost on a single mistake. They’re shaped — for better or worse — by a small number of choices. The book walks through each one.

01
When to claim Social Security
Age 62, full retirement age, or 70. The right answer depends on your household situation, your other income sources, and what survivor benefits will mean later.
Ch. 6–8Social Security Strategy
02
How to handle a lump sum or pension
Rollover, annuitize, or stay put? Each choice carries trade-offs around control, survivor protection, and how the money behaves over a 30-year retirement.
Ch. 9–13Lump-Sum Strategy
03
Where to draw income from, in what order
Sequencing withdrawals across taxable, tax-deferred, and Roth accounts can quietly extend the life of a portfolio — or shorten it.
Ch. 14–17Tax-Efficient Income
04
How to plan for healthcare and longevity
Medicare, supplemental coverage, IRMAA brackets, and the long-term care question — what to consider, when, and how it fits the rest of the plan.
Ch. 18–21Healthcare & Longevity
05
What you leave behind
Beneficiary planning, tax-aware legacy strategy, charitable giving, and the documents that translate intent into outcomes for the people who matter most.
Ch. 22–25Legacy Planning
